Fancy becoming an optometrist? Well, here is a fantastic opportunity on offer for a regional optometry student!

Dale Rolfe, “It’s great to give local kids an opportunity and then see them take it with both hands and excel. Even better, it is fantastic to see these kids turn into adults and professionals and return home to bring their skills back to their community".

Dale Rolfe is an optometrist in regional NSW based on the Mid North Coast in Forster. He has over 30 years’ of experience as an optometrist, graduating from the University of NSW in 1986 with honours.  He moved to Forster to first work, then become a partner in his optometry practice and eventually became the sole owner of Eyecare Plus. He grew from 1 practice to the current 11 practices which range in geographical locality from Umina to Forster.

Dale likes to encourage kids from regional areas to consider optometry as a career and has previously employed new graduates from regional areas such as Lansdowne, Taree, Wollongong, Tumut and Forster.

In 1996 Dale set up a cadetship to help local kids from his hometown who were interested in optometry become optometrists. His first candidate, Elke Morrell, graduated from Great Lakes College in 1996 and was accepted into the optometry bachelor degree course. She graduated and returned to Forster to work as an optometrist and have a family. Dale said, “It’s great to give local kids an opportunity and then see them take it with both hands and excel. Even better, it is fantastic to see these kids turn into adults and professionals and return home to bring their skills back to their community.

Dale is expanding his cadetship to include any optometry student from regional Australia. The student, if successful is paid $3000 a year to help with the costs of study for a maximum of 5 years. In return they are offered a position at one of Dale’s practices as an optometrist with a three year commitment from both parties.
